Terre de fraise – couleurs du quotidien
With the advent of paid vacation, Wépion, a resort town in the Meuse region, offers its remarkable strawberries to as many people as possible. This tender pleasure still finds refuge in a world that, deep down, has not completely changed.
The series begins by evoking human activity on the surface of the globe, between heaven and earth. A Red Devils jersey locates us in Belgium, a Belgium of contrasts. The colors of the country appear abandoned. Are we really there?
Next, the land is labor, and the work of women in the early twentieth century has been replaced by that of men from elsewhere. African Belgium and Belgian Africa are evoked in this work of bent men.
In the sales scenes, it is as if the strawberry were soliciting. At the roadside, putting itself on display, it waits to succumb to the greed of passersby. It makes them want to stop and give in to the call of a sweet red, for a moment of pleasure.
Finally, the Belgian flag is flying this time. It catches the wind. Red at the forefront. The Wépion strawberry is a typically Belgian standard, the Belgium we love: ordinary and profound, between earth and sky.
